India Chooses To Become Indian Union, With 36 Nation States | Prakhar Khandelwal

Partition was violent and harrowing, and our leaders realised that simply calling for unity wasn’t enough—we needed a practical approach to make it work in the most diverse country on the planet. They looked elsewhere for inspiration. The United States, in all its post-War glory, seemed a lucrative muse. The founding fathers saw merit in how the different US states were highly individualistic, yet also pledged allegiance to the idea of a ‘greater’ Federal Union. And so, India was constituted as a Federal Union, with each State a sovereign in its own right. A necessary compromise, and a kind of unity that will last us in the long run. Today, the Preamble of the Constitution adorns the wall of the atrium of the Supreme Court.
