With the discovery of oil reserves in Assam, India was able to pump money into Nehru’s vision of a ‘new India’–a nation with political independence and sovereign wealth. Consequently, it revived the economy by boosting various sectors, and provided opportunities for growth and development. India takes its spotlight back, which was once lost with colonization. The tea tycoons of Assam became oil tycoons. But it all came at a cost–India becomes vulnerable to frequent foreign attacks, insurgencies, environmental degradation, and the Northeastern culture and wildlife is endangered.
