This work is a reinvention of the spiritual/religious festivals particularly during Thaipusam. We see the lines between penance and pleasure blurred. Thaipusam is an expression of extreme devotion and bondage that invests heavily in pushing the limits of your body entirely. With the absence of the prude nature of the British regime, these festivals would be excellent avenues for devotees to sexually express themselves.
