British-spread vitriol had divided the country along religious and communal lines, forevermore ensuring that India’s greatest enemy would frequently be herself. In this timeline, however, the Partition never came to pass, for reasons both political and cultural—India chose unity. Fast forward to present day, and India is unique among nations—our values of democracy, free speech, sexual liberation, secularism, and shared justice outshine similar tenets in even the most progressive countries. Sure, we still contend with the long-running problems of illiteracy and deprivation, but everyone realises that together is the best way ahead, and the future looks bright.
