Today, the lessons of the 1970s Chipko movement have seeped into the national consciousness. It has also become a major topic for our political leaders that are looking to enable environmental conservation. The millennials care about the environment but are wrapped up in their digital lives and remain chipko’d to their screens. Forseeing that new threats to the forest require new-age solutions; PM Modi – no stranger to photo ops and social media campaigns, launches a Chipko selfie campaign to win brownie points with this environmentally-conscious voting class. The revamped movement, as obnoxious as it sounds, works. A win-win for all!
