In 1986, India created the National Policy on Education. The government took a step in the right direction by launching a programme called Mahila Samakhya that focused on women empowerment. The programme’s goal was to create a learning environment for women to realise their potential, learn to demand information and find the knowledge to take charge of their own lives.
